Independence
Unlike all other major political parties, UKIP does not believe that the United Kingdom has to throw in it’s lot with others to survive or even to thrive. Instead we believe in Independence, Free Trade and entering into voluntary international treaties to co-operate with other sovereign states.
Some elements of the media have on occasion portrayed UKIP as isolationist. This is not the case at all. We absolutely agree that we should have free trade, immigration and international co-operation.
However we believe that you, the British people, should have absolute control over your government and your country and that no other state should have the ability to override your decisions.
Free Trade
We support free trade, indeed we think it is necessary and a force for incredible good. UKIP would seek to open free trade agreements with Europe, the United States and the Commonwealth of Nations (British Commonwealth).
However British membership of the EU interferes with our ability to have free trade with other areas of the world.
Immigration
Contrary to media portrayals, UKIP is not against immigration. It is against unlimited immigration. It is seriously irresponsible to allow very large numbers of people to enter the UK, let alone an unknown number of migrants.
The hundreds of thousands of people that entered the UK from EU accession areas over the last few years have put unprecedented strain on public services. UKIP favours a points-based immigration system that allows as many people to enter the UK as leave the UK – a net-zero immigration policy.
International Co-operation
UKIP doesn’t believe that we need a supranational political union in order to co-operate with other countries. The recent Convention on Cluster Munitions proves that the UK is perfectly capable of entering into voluntary international agreements without the need for the EU to be involved.
A UKIP government would utilise referenda to determine public opinion on important international issues and would enter into voluntary international treaties. Currently the UK is forced to pass legislation on a vast number of international, national and even local issues because of it’s membership of the EU.
