Press release: UKIP's Council Challenge
The UK Independence Party is mounting its biggest challenge yet to Gloucester City Council in the May elections. The Party is to field a record six candidates.
“We were founded to secure the UK’s withdrawal from the European Union,” said Branch Chairman, Mike Smith.
“But our mission is now much wider. It is to restore democracy and independence to all levels of government and, above, power all to the people. We have a radical, fresh and exciting local manifesto, but there will be no party whip. Our councillors will be free to vote in the best interests of their constituents.”
Those who are standing again are the well-known former Mayor of Barton Danny Sparkes (Abbey Ward), pensioners’ champion John Todd (Matson & Robinswood) and popular youth worker Richard Edwards (Moreland).
Mike Smith who was Conservative Councillor for Barnwood from 1973 to 1986 is standing again, this time for UKIP. Newcomers are Frank Moran (Longlevens), and Peter Gilmartin (Quedgeley, Fieldcourt) “The wide age range of our candidates shows that the UK Independence Party is the party of the future. We are the only real opposition to the old parties”, said Mr Smith.
